内容記述 | Many Japanese went in search of business opportunities on the Liaodong Peninsula when it was ceded to Japan after the Russo- Japanese War. The Murai family of Kushigahama in Yamaguchi Prefecture (now Shunan City) , which was involved in sake production, also took part in planning trade and fi sheries on the Liaodong Peninsula, but mainly put their eff ort into salt production. Japan in the pre-modern era produced large quantities of salt through a unique method called “channeled salt terraces” (the irihama method) mainly on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea. In the latter half of the Tokugawa era, the main production centers were so successful that they even regulated salt production communally. After the Meiji Restoration, salt manufacturers in Japan sought to export salt to Qing China and Korea, a phenomenon that indicates the level of confi dence they held in their unique salt production methods. The traditional method in the pan-Yellow Sea rim of sun-drying salt, however, produced large quantities at far less cost than the Japanese channeled salt terrace method. This made it very diffi cult for Japanese salt to enter the market. On the other hand, a number of Japanese companies and individuals participated in salt production on the Liaodong Peninsula. The Murai family is a case in point. The details of salt production were carried in reports published by the South Manchuria Railway Company (Mantetsu) , but very few are still extant, and it is now diffi cult to verify the state of Japanese management of salt production in Liaodong. The analysis in this paper is based mainly on the correspondence between the Manchuria office of the Murai family and their home in Kushigahama concerning the Murai family’ s salt production management in Liaodong. |
