| 内容記述 | In early modern times, Westerners, notably missionaries, generally worked hard to learn Chinese in order to achieve their original purpose of propagating Christianity, despite differences in propagation policies as represented by the Chinese Rites Controversy. Consequently, they achieved significant results from early on regarding research into Mandarin Chinese, dialects, and grammatical theories. In the past, I expressed my personal opinions about what could have been the Chinese language that modern Westerners learned or intended to master. In this paper, I would like to consider their views of Chinese writing styles, mainly on the basis of many works written by these Westerners in Chinese. Their views of Chinese writing styles are also related to the issue of alienation between spoken and written styles, an issue long present in the Chinese language. | |||||
