| 内容記述 | The aim of this paper is chiefly to trace how Malthus's Essay was received in the 19th century Spain, conducted by Robert S. Smith's article of "The Reception of Malthus's Essay on Population in Spain" (1969). Smith was a leading disciple of Joseph John Spengler (1902-91) and published "Spanish Population Thought before Malthus" (1954), but he died suddenly in 1968. Jose Maria Noguera & Joaquin Miquel issued the first Spain version of the 2nd Essay from the French edition of 1845 in 1846. However, generally speaking, Malthus's Essay affected Spain very little in indeed in the 19th century. Populationists were more prevailing than Malthusianism and advocated their land reform and agricultural improvement policies. Malthus's proposal for gradual abolition of poor-laws was also taken little notice of. For, in the 19th century, benefaction given by hospitals, asylums and pious establishment disappeared, and, in addition, Malthus was an Anglican priest. Under these circumstances, I especially paid attention to works by Álvaro Flórez Estrada (1766-1853). He often stayed in London in the early 19th century, and studied British classical political economics. At that time, he also read Malthus's Essay (perhaps, 5th, or 6th edition). Estrada was a member of the Cortes in 1834, advocated long-term leasing of farms adequate enough to support a family of nine in the article of 1838. I maintain that when Estrada generated this conception, Estrada got not only to Sismondi's Nouveaux principes d'économie politique (1819), but also to Appendix, in the 3th edition and the subsequent editions of Essay. | |||||
