| 内容記述 | The philosophy of Zhu Xi, known as Zhu Zixue (朱子学), is still often misunderstood. This is also true for the concept of “Fen” (分) discussed here. The concept of “Fen” implies a logic that demands the protection of one’s social position, as seen in expressions like “in accordance with one’s status,” “knowing one’s place,” or “acting within one’s limits.” This logic assumes the subordinate should obediently submit to the superior, and the philosophy of Zhu Xi emphasizes such hierarchical distinctions, often viewed as an oppressive ideology that does not tolerate dissent from those in lower positions. In this article, representative cases of such misunderstandings are addressed. Subsequently, examples of the use of the term “Fen” in Zhu Xi’s writings, as well as discussions on rectification of names (正名論) and proper relationships (名分論), are examined. Differences between the Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu (資治通鑑綱目) and the views on proper relationships in Mito scholarship (水戸学) are also pointed out. Additionally, comparisons are made with the thoughts of OGYU Sorai (荻生徂徠) regarding the concept of “Fen.” Finally, some personal observations are offered on why misunderstandings about Zhu Xi’s thought have arisen. | |||||
