| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to clarify the cultural interactions in East Asia by focusing on one translation of Robinson Crusoe, which was published under the title of Gusulicheng (辜蘇厯程). The translation was a Chinese dialect Cantonese interpretation. It was published in 1902 in Guangdong, and translated by an English missionary with the Chinese name of Yingweilin (英爲霖). This is the first time that Robinson Crusoe's story has been rendered in Cantonese. For people living in the Canton area at the time, aside from those who had some exposure to foreign languages, this was probably the first time for them to learn about Robinson Crusoe. Prior to 1902 there had been no Chinese translations made of Robinson Crusoe. This paper shall focus on the cultural interactions present in the translation, and explore reasons behind the changes made by the translator. | |||||
