概要
内容記述タイプ Other
内容記述 Arahat (Luohan) statue in Hachijyōjima Rekishi Minzoku Shiryōkan 八丈島 歴史民俗資料館 (the Museum for History and Folk Culture in Hachijyō Island) is known by its unique appearance of wearing cloak, though the details have not been clear by now. Our research proves that this statue was created in China at the end of 17th century through structures and types. HachijyōJikki 八丈実記 (True Records in Hachijyō Island) mentions this statue as "Dharma達磨". As the statue shows front teeth, our observations also approve that this particular statue should be that of Dharma rather than Arahat. Figures for Dharma can be roughly divided into one in a shape of sitting meditation with a Red Cloth pulling over from his head, and the other one with beard and a shaved head with his front teeth emerged. Medieval figures for Dharma adopted the former image. During the Edo period, temples and monasteries belonging to Soto branch enshrined the Dharma figure as well as the figure of Daiken Shuri Bosatsu 大権修利菩薩, whereas those belonging to Obaku branch did the Dharma figure and the figure of Kakō Bosatsu 華光菩薩. Temples and monasteries belonging to Soto branch adopted the former image of Dharma and it was flourished amongst Soto temples. However, temples and monasteries belonging to Obaku branch which had strong Chinese features adopted the latter image of Dharma which, however, did not spread even amongst Obaku branch itself due to its eccentric appearance. Under these circumstances, it would be likely to have invited the figure of Dharma which kept the appearance of the former image with some features of the latter image added.
