| 内容記述 | 三位一体論争においては、ユニテリアンは、聖書と理性を基にして、神は唯一つの位格である、キリストは神の子、神の僕、聖霊は神の力であって、どちらも神ではない、と主張した。これに対して三位一体論者は、神は一つである、しかし神には三つの位格がある、聖書はそのことを示し、理性はそれと矛盾しない、と主張した。しかし、三位一体論者の三位一体についての理解はさまざまであって、彼等の間でも論争が起こった。ユニテリアンはこの対立を利用して、三位一体論は誤りであると主張した。義認論争は、国教反対者の中での論争であった。厳格カルヴァン派は、人間は罪を行なうのみ、神は選ばれた者を信仰に導き、キリストの正しさの故に義として救いを与えられる、と主張した。穏健カルヴァン派は、人間は罪人であり、人間のどんな徳も完全ではない、信仰もよき業も義とされて救いを受けるに値する正しさではないけれども、信仰とよき業は救いの不可欠の条件である、と主張した。ロックは二つの論争をよく知っていたけれども、真理は聖書にあると考えて、聖書を探り、探究の結論を彼の著作で示した。 | |||||

| 内容記述 | The controversy on Trinity. Unitarians asserted, based on the Scriptures and reason, that God is only one Person, that Christ is the Son of God, the Servant of God, the Holy Spirit the Power of God, so that neither is God. Against them Trinitarians contended that God is one, but that in God exist three Persons- the Scriptures testify to this and this does not contradict reason. Trinitarians, however, had various understandings of Trinity, and disputed with each other. Unitarians, taking advantage of this dissension, asserted the falsity of Trinitarianism. The controversy on Justification occurred among the dissenters. Strict Calvinists maintained that man can do nothing but commit sin, but that God does lead the elect to faith and, because of Christ's righteousness, makes them righteous and deserving of salvation. Against them, moderate Calvinists contended that man is a sinner, that no human virtues are perfect, that is, neither faith nor good works are meritorious righteousness duly bringing justification and salvation, but that faith and good works are indispensable conditions for salvation. Locke knew well about these controversies, but thought that the truth lay in the Scripture, searched it and set forth the results of this search in his books. | |||||
