| 内容記述 | Max Dauthendey (1867-1918), German poet, novelist and playwright, visited Japan and stayed for a month during his world tour from 1905 to 1906, and published 'Eight Scenes of Lake Biwa', a literary work associated with the Japanese classic cycle pictures 'Eight Scenes of Omi' in 1911. It consists of eight independent short stories based on the original scenes, and is subtitled 'Love Stories of Japan'. They are 'like fairy tales' and 'exotic and erotic love stories'. Dauthendey incorporated in these stories, 1) Japanese shrines and temples, Buddhist images, and legends, 2) Japanese society and the citizens' lives, 3) current events, 4) issues concerning different cultures and races, and other important topics, and tried to make each story like a pictorial work. For example, he expressed his intention most successfully in the 7th story 'the Sunset in Seta', and discussed the scenery or the pictorial aspects most extraordinarily connecting the scenery with the 'emptiness' of traditional Japanese rooms in 'the Autumn Moon in Ishiyama'. In this sense, we have to highly evaluate the pictorial nature of this work as well as his talent as a painter. | |||||
