| 内容記述 | In 1868, the Chinese Embassy, under the direction of honorable Anson Burlingame, visited Great Britain. On the background of the disharmony caused by the religion-based dispute between the Chinese Inland Mission (CIM) and the citizens of Yangzhou, the embassy obtained the official and binding declaration of Her Majesty's government toward the co-operation with the Qing government as well as her subjects. In 1872, honorable Tomomi Iwakura and his embassy visited the United Kingdom. In Great Britain, including Ireland, the Japanese embassy carried out thorough inspections and studies, gaining a great deal of information on British modern industrial civilization. Both the embassies were accorded courteous receptions from Her Majesty's government as well as other authorities in England, Scotland, and Ireland. In the previous research on the embassies, all of their activities have been examined primarily from the perspectives of international relations or international politics. Meanwhile, especially in Japan, the new trend of studying the Iwakura Embassy through European local documents began. This paper attempts to use the Anglo-American newspapers, especially British news reports, to discuss the agenda of the two embassies. | |||||
