| 内容記述 | The Seven Petitions of Oratio Dominica with Seven Sacraments and Seven Virtues (a series of engravings kept at the Ibaraki Municipal Museum of Cultural Assets, Japan) appears to have been derived from an earlier version with the same title made in Lyon in 1598 by Matthäus Greuter (1564/66-1638), which is now housed in Paris. In this paper, I compare the details in each Paris engraving with the Ibaraki engravings. The most conspicuous difference can be seen in the Sixth Petition, which is associated with the sacrament of marriage and the virtue of prudence. In the Paris version, a naked Eve personifies this petition; however, in the Ibaraki version, Eve is clothed, which makes this version unique. It has been suggested that the Ibaraki version was made for export to Asia to be used by missionaries. However, as the engravings appear to date from the time of the Catholic Reformation in the 16th century, which had been prompted by the Protestant Reformation, it is possible that this petition was made for missionary use in Europe specifically to target protestants for whom marriage was also contradictory. Greuter had possibly witnessed the Strasbourg Bishops' War, which occurred partly as a result of the marriage of a bishop. | |||||
