| 内容記述 | The aim of this paper is to ascertain the number of extant Edo era (1603-1868) Japanese commentaries and lecture notes on Zhu Xi's (1130-1200) Reflections on Things at Hand (Jinsilu). Much of the research on Japanese Confucianism has focused on an examination of the Four Books and Five Classics of the Confucian canon. However there are many other important works which remain mostly neglected by modern scholarship. The Jinsilu is unfortunately one of these works. Wing-tsit Chan wrote an authoritative English translation of the Jinsilu, and in it also listed and described approximately 48 Japanese commentaries and lecture notes from the Edo period. He added to this number in a later Chinese language publication, with the number finally reaching 89. However since the publication of this work in 1982, almost no other research has been done on these Japanese commentaries. Now, with the aid of internet databases it is possible to examine to a greater extent just how many of these commentaries still remain extant in various libraries and institutions. As a result of this paper's examination, it has now been ascertained that 101 Japanese commentaries and lecture notes remain extant from the Early Modern period. Also, 28 of these commentaries have been listed here for the first time as far as is known. This paper is merely a preliminary examination in order to aid further research on the Japanese interpretations of the Jinsilu. In order to understand how the various Japanese Confucian scholars actually interpreted and understood the Jinsilu, it will be necessary to examine the contents of theses commentaries in detail and compare them to the various extant commentaries in China and Korea. It is hoped that this paper will play a part in furthering the understanding of the role played by this important Neo-Confucian text in Early Modern Japan and East Asia as a whole. | |||||
