| 内容記述 | In Japan, the English education system has provided less importance to teaching English pronunciation. This has resulted in students’ poor English accent and lack of confidence while speaking. The author has taught English to junior students at a university. The students’ reading and grammar ability were satisfactory. In contrast, their English pronunciation was dissatisfactory and they spoke English with a strong Japanese accent. That is, they did not seem to be conscious of English sounds. The author discovered that more than 70% of the students had never been taught English pronunciation at school until then. Accordingly, the author provided English pronunciation training in class and attempted to teach them the manner of articulation. The purpose of the training was to enhance students’ awareness of English pronunciation and make them realize their improvements in pronunciation. The training comprised three sections: (1) teaching consonant monosyllables, which Japanese people consider difficult to pronounce; (2) singing English songs to learn English rhythm and linking; and (3) speaking to confirm their accomplishment. As a result of the training, the students not only noticed their shortcomings and improvements in their own pronunciation but also expressed a strong interest in learning the manner of articulation. This paper elaborates on the English pronunciation training, which the students considered enjoyable and effective. |
