内容記述 | A longitudinal study of katakana loanwords in newspapers and magazines has demonstrated an increasing use of katakana loanwords. The National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (NINJAL) has produced a list of paraphrases for katakana loanwords that are unintelligible or not yet fully established, though paraphrasing them with familiar Japanese is considered to be a deterrent against excessive uses of katakana loanwords. However, the study confirms that some katakana loanwords have been accepted despite existing Japanese vocabulary, becoming a genuine part of basic Japanese vocabulary, and bridging gaps in the lexicon where Japanese words appear to be inadequate. So far most teaching materials for foreign students have often focused on pronunciation differences and fluctuation in sound representations as well as meaning differences, and others in recent years have referred to vocabulary according to separate categories. But we should develop self‒study exercises built‒into teaching materials that focus on co‒occurrences of concrete nouns as well as those of abstract nouns where both native Japanese words and loanwords co-occur. The self-study materials for foreign students developed by the authors have laid stress on co-occurrences or collocations in compound loanwords. In order to learn abstract katakana loanword noun that have been recognized and accepted as basic Japanese vocabulary, we need a new kind of self-study textbooks for katakana loanwords with a rich variety of examples as well as exercises. |
