| 内容記述 | “The Story of a Masterpiece” was published from January / February, 1868 in the magazine, Galaxy when Henry James was 25 years old. This story is about a portrait painted by one Stephen Baxter who was at one time engaged to the model of the portrait, Marian Everett. Although Baxter and Everett were engaged, they were not able to marry partly because Baxter’s lack of success as an artist. Several years later, Marian is engaged to John Lenox, a wealthy widower. Lenox meets Baxter through his friend, then he asks Baxter to paint the portrait of Everett. Observing the portrait of Everett, Lenox learns that there was something between Baxter and Everett that Lenox had not been aware. Although he marries Everett, he doesn’t like the portrait and destroys it at the end of the story. This story is probably categorized as one of James’ so-called art stories. For James, art reveals the truth in life. In this story, too, the portrait of Everett reveals certain truth about something that lies in the heart of the painter. “The Story of a Masterpiece” might be a prototype of James’ later, important works. | |||||
