These perspectives might reflect the views of teasers and targets, as well as those of individuals with high levels of social skill and those with low levels of social skill. The present study aimed to examine the effects of social skills and the role in teasing on the perception of teasing incidents, by using an experimental design of 2 (role: teaser vs. target)×2 (social skills: high vs. low) with role as a within-participant factor and the latter as a between-participant factor. A group of 90 undergraduates participated twice, within an interval of about 6-months. They were asked to relive their experiences of a teasing incident either as a target or as a teaser from their past memory, and to complete various questions about them. The results showed that only targets with low social skills regarded their experiences very negatively, whereas targets with high social skills perceived the event as humorous and as less damaging than did teasers.
