The previous study, conducted with professional interpreters, revealed that most interpreting services were being provided on-line or via remote interpreting service (RIS) as of March 2021 due to COVID-19 countermeasures. It was found that some interpreters felt uncomfortable interpreting in settings where the face of the speaker or the meeting participants could not be displayed onscreen and recognized such a situation as a disadvantage, while other interpreters were happy to interpret facing a blank screen, saying the situation made it easier for the interpreters to focus on speech sounds. Those findings led the present research into the relationship between interpreting and visual information, particularly the sight of a speaker’s face. Results suggest that if the interpreter is familiar with the speaker or the topic of the meeting, they may not consider it necessary to see the speaker’s face; however, there is considerable variance among individual interpreters as to the necessity of such visual information.
