 note = {Herbert Allen Giles (1845-1935) was a leading British Sinologist, a former diplomat in China, and a professor of Sinology at Cambridge University. His first edition of A Chinese-English Dictionary was published in 1892, and the second edition in 1912. A Chinese-English Dictionary is considered the greatest academic achievement of Giles's life, and a milestone in the study of Chinese language and Chinese characters in British Sinology circles and in the West in general. The second edition is not a mere reprint of the first edition; the ontological section increased from the original 1354 pages to 1736 pages. So far, when scholars talk about Giles's A Chinese-English Dictionary or about the revision of the two editions, they mention what Giles wrote in the preface, but there is no detailed discussion of what was added to the new edition and where the changes occurred. The end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century was a period of intense change in the Chinese language. By comparing the first and second editions of A Chinese-English Dictionary, I analyze the increase in new words and meanings, which is important when discussing the modernization of Chinese.},
