| 内容記述 | Takahashi Shoko's collection of photographs and a letter detailing the circumstances leading to the dotation of this collection are presently held at the Vatican Library. Irrespective of their huge historical importance, these historical materials were mostly forgotten for a long time. This paper offers an exhaustive analysis of the said collection of photographs and the background leading to their donation. The materials of Takahashi Shoko is composed on "the dedication letter to the Pope Pius 11th" (dated December 1933), Inventary of the old hand-copied sutra, and the 8 old hand-copied sutras "Koshakyo" (the Heian era, the Kamakura era, the Nara era, and the Muromachi era). Takahashi's background is known a little. According to a collection of Biographies of hobbyists in Niigata Prefecture "Etsusa Shumi no Hitobito" (published in 1938), he live in Niigata city, comes from a noble family in Raigouji village. Moreover he is an authority of committe of a hobby in Niigata Mainichi newspaper, and a critic of paintings and calligraphic works, and a person who dedicated a letter to the Vatican Museum, having received a commission from the Pope. According to dedication letter by Takahashi, in the opinion that the offer of the found documents to the Holy Father may have some usefulness for the study of religious problems, after counseled with Anton Ceska, Prefect Apostolic of Niigata and a monk of Society of the Divine Word, he have granted the honor of offering them to the Holy Father for his Museum. Sutras belong to Daihannya. In this paper, while focusing on the relationship between Takahashi and Ceska, I will discuss the old hand-copied sutra dedicated by Takahashi to the Vatican, and doing so will bring to fore a little-known fact about the cross-cultural history between Japan, Niigata, and the Vatican. | |||||
