Under such circumstances, Japanese Shibunkai (斯文会) held a grand Confucianism conference in 1935 in line with the Japanese Government’s policy of "Sino-Japanese rapprochemen" towards China. Slogans such as "Respect Confucius" and "Promote Confucianism" were used to draw in Chinese people and dispel anti-Japanese sentiments in China. To achieve this goal, the Japanese side used diplomatic means to entice influential Chinese scholars, celebrities and descendants of Confucius to attend the conference.
