| 内容記述 | Mishima Yukio's ritual suicide in the Ground Self-Defence Forces' Ichigaya Garrison on November 25th, 1970 echoed throughout Japan and the world. It is widely known that Mishima was an ultranationalist and ardent worshipper of the emperor; however, this awareness is primarily due to the lasting impressions his "death" left. The question then arises as to whether or not he had always worshipped the emperor, and if not, it is then necessary to question why he became one. In order to answer this simple question, this paper examines three of Mishima's works - Yūkoku, Utsukushii hoshiand Eirei no koe - from an historical, sociological and cultural perspective. In considering his work in light of the historical conditions of the 1960s, it is possible to establish the formative process of his historical awareness. In the bewildering chaos of the post-war 1960s, Mishima explored his own identity, and in order to escape this uncertain status, sought an absolute foundation or strength. |
