It is\nhard to deny how much revolution as main theme has been a\nguiding force to usher forward, the Chinese Republic, so constructed\nupon its own revolutionary summons. However, from perspective of\nwhat conditions prevailed after the Chinese Republic was built, there\nseemed to still not be resolved so many intensive confl icts within\nthe internal workings of Chinese culture and politics ‒ all as\nrelevant also to ongoing threat of imperialist expansion,\nencroachment upon China from abroad. On the contrary, the\nrevolutionary tendency was intensifi ed by the wish of Chinese\npeople to respond to questions raised by confrontation with external\npowers and just secondarily as being able to stand up to such, her\ninternal struggles with party politics and with feuding among local\nwarlords during the early 20th century. What however is revolution?\nHow is it possible for us to understand the conditions of\nrevolutionary thoughts behind the May-Fourth movement? For this,\nZhu Qian-zhi used to inquire: Is there the meaning of revolution in\ncritical thinking or not? Shouldn’t our thought in critiques be pushed\nforward to （apply to） the revolution? Is it possible to call our\nthought critical thinking without there being revolution （to emerge\nout of it） ? Here, although Zhu very consciously assessed existing\ndiff erences between reforms being made in revolutionary thought\nand of critical thinking in general to be problematic, it still seems\nnecessary for us to explore what arguments he made further: Can\nthe revolution equally be treated\nthere of into party politics? Or does the revolution just function as\na slogan for the “new culture” in its desire to clean up old thinking\n- thinking of the old generation? What the actual meaning of\nrevolution pointed is to be the confrontations between the 袁世凱\n（Yuan Shih-kai）and the construction within form of State during the\nperiod of the May-Fourth Movement after 1919, or to be a certain\nway of recognition in social classes when Chinese Communist\nParty was established in 1921? Could we just attribute the sense\nabout revolution of the May-Fourth Movement into a prorogation\nwithin Science and Democracy as such? How radical changes can it\nmake by the thought of revolution? How radical changes do we\nneed? Whom should we revolt?
