| 内容記述 | The Meiji period Western-style artist Aoki Shigeru (1882-1911) passed away at the young age of 28, yet is highly acclaimed in the history of modern Japanese art due to the superb expressive style of his paintings. Many scholars have studied not only Aoki's works, but also his life, describing him variously as a man of great talent and a tragic painter. However, analysis of his sketches have not been particularly extensive. This article analyzes it in the context of the time, and we also take up sketches of "Wadatsuminoirokonomiya" (Paradise under the sea). Based on this analysis, this paper provides evidence that "Wadatsuminoirokonomiya" is influenced by more than fin de siècle art such as pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and Gustave Moreau (1826-1898). In addition to this, this study illustrates the production process of Aoki's paintings. | |||||
