| 内容記述 | This study examines how girls' high school education in colonial Taiwan shaped women's career consciousness and contributed to changing images of womanhood within the ideological framework of "womanhood and motherhood" promoted by the Japanese colonial government. Prior to Japanese rule, girls' education in Taiwan was limited to the family and centered on Confucian moral virtues and domestic skills. After the institutionalization of the ideology of womanhood and motherhood through the Girls' High School Ordinance of 1899 was institutionalized, this foundation of female secondary education was introduced to Taiwan. While numerous studies have discussed the formation, development, and significance of this ideology in Japan, its reception and the ways in which Taiwanese students responded to it under colonial conditions have not been sufficiently explored. Focusing on Taiwanese girls' high school students, this study investigates whether schooling merely reinforced the prescribed roles of womanhood and motherhood or enabled students to pursue broader career possibilities beyond domesticity. The study analyzes two types of sources: (1) Taiwanese newspaper reports that reflect evolving social perceptions of female students and (2) statistical data from the Taiwan Education Annual Reports that record students' post-graduation paths. Findings illustrate that despite ideological and institutional constraints defining ideal womanhood, girls' high school education at least partially nurtured career consciousness and suggested new images of women in colonial Taiwan. | |||||||||
