| 内容記述 | This paper analyzes Beijing Customs Dialogues (1924), a Japanese-language textbook for learning Beijing Mandarin, as a unique primary source in exploring the urban social history of early Republican Beijing. Moving beyond conventional macro-level institutional analyses, this study uses microlevel dialogues between a "Beijing native" and a "Beijing Mandarin learner" to elucidate how ordinary residents experienced, articulated, and made sense of urban modernization in their daily lives. The analysis is structured around five thematic areas: the reorganization of urban space and civic adaptation, the development and limitations of municipal administration, economic hardships and poverty, shifts in social customs and values, and the reception of modernity in healthcare and education. The findings reveal that Beijing's modernization was not a linear progression but a complex process characterized by constant contradictions, adaptations, resistance, and transformation. While acknowledging the constructed nature of the "Beijing image" presented through the pedagogical filter of the "Beijing native", the study argues that the text vividly captures the era’s social consciousness, offering invaluable insights into the multifaceted and lived realities of a city navigating profound change. | |||||
