| 内容記述 | In The Eastward Spread of Christianity and the Responses of Chinese and Japanese Spiritual Leaders (西教東漸と中日事情) published as No. 57 of the Research Book Series of the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies (東西学術研究所研究叢刊) in 2019, I examined four Chinese cases and seven Japanese cases of the interaction of Christianity with Confucianism and Shintoism, mainly in the late 19ᵗʰ and early 20ᵗʰ centuries. The present paper explores a fifth Chinese case from the same period in Hunan Province, which has been known for its well-established Confucian tradition since the Song dynasty and its modern army led by Zeng Guofan, who played a key role in suppressing the Taiping Rebellion of 1851-1864. By analyzing the westward movement of the London Missionary Society and the China Inland Mission from the coastal area toward the middle Yangtze River, the Anti-Western religious propaganda promoted by Zhou Han 周漢, and the Yale-in-China Association's Collaborative Educational Initiatives with Hunan Government Officials led by Hu Mei (胡美, Edward Hicks Hume's Chinese name) and Yan Fuqing 顏福慶, this paper sheds new light on the transformation of the relations between the literati of Hunan Province and the Protestant missionary movement in the late Qing and early Republican periods. | |||||
