| 内容記述 | This paper examines how Sekizan Myōjin was received and reinterpreted, and ultimately reshaped into a distinctive divinity within the Tendai tradition during the Heian period, drawing on a range of historical sources. It first clarifies how the seafaring deity was characterized as a dragon-king in Ennin’s Record of a Pilgrimage to China in Search of the Law and subsequently reconfigured as a guardian deity (gohōshin) and protector of the state (chingo-shin) within Tendai textual traditions after Ennin's return to Japan. The paper then analyzes the process by which Sekizan Myōjin was incorporated into the protective system of Mount Hiei. Focusing on the elevation of divine ranks from the mid-Heian period onward, the study, addresses the discrepancies—such as the appearance of the name "Sekizan God" in Honchō Seiki—and inconsistencies in recorded ranks, arguing that these issues reflect the contemporary political circumstances and the multilayered nature of ritual spaces and terminological diversity in the sources. Furthermore, the transition from the martial imagery symbolized by bows and arrows to courtly iconography featuring a deity holding a shaku and staff is interpreted as a shift accompanying the institutionalization of Sekizan Myōjin as a guardian deity. The paper also traces the establishment, decline, and reconstruction of Sekizan Zen-in, demonstrating how Sekizan Myōjin became firmly anchored as a crucial religious and political figure within the sacred space of Mount Hiei. Overall, the study shows that Sekizan Myōjin was not merely an imported foreign deity but a complex and dynamic divine figure reconstituted within the Tendai school's institutional structure, self-understanding, and broader ideology of state protection. | |||||
