| 内容記述 | Amid the tremendous global cultural interactions of the early 20th century, Liang Shuming published his masterpiece, Eastern and Western Culture and Philosophy (1921). In this book, he discussed the differences between Eastern and Western cultures and philosophies based on the epistemology of Yogācāra-Vijñānavāda. More specifically, Liang proposed a theory of culture asserting that human life development should first satisfy material needs as per trends in the modern West and then seek a balanced relationship between human life and nature in accordance with traditional Chinese culture. Finally, he proposed that the major problems of human life and death be solved in ways common in ancient India, while urging that Confucianism be revived because Western philosophy had led to the destruction of European countries in the First World War. This analysis of cultural trends offered Liang a logical path through which to convert his Buddhist life philosophy into Confucianism. This paper reviews Liang's views on human life based on Yogācāra-Vijñānavāda and analyzes the reasons for his shift from Buddhism to Confucianism by examining Eastern and Western Culture and Philosophy. Through this appraisal, the study clarifies the purpose of Liang’s life philosophy and provides a deeper internal understanding of his cultural theory. | |||||||||
