| 内容記述 | Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism, particularly in the thought of Zhu Xi, have often been understood as harsh ideologies that oppressed women. In this view, the belief in "male superiority and female inferiority" present in Confucianism was intensified in Neo-Confucianism, thereby reinforcing the oppression and subordination of women. Such an understanding has long been treated almost as an established orthodoxy. However, a close reading of historical sources suggests that this view of the position of women in Confucianism is overly simplistic. Earlier scholarship appears to have been based on misunderstandings and misreadings. Accordingly, this paper reexamines views of women in Neo-Confucianism through a consideration of three issues: (1) remarriage, (2) the meaning and usage of the term "male superiority and female inferiority," and (3) misconceptions surrounding the Family Rituals (Jiali) and marriage. In particular, this paper aims to clarify long-standing misinterpretations of Cheng Yi's oft-cited statement, "it is better to starve to death than to remarry." | |||||
