| 内容記述 | This paper reexamines the Chinese expression "左右" (zuǒyòu), focusing on its use as a modal adverb in vernacular fiction of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Originally a spatial noun meaning "left and right," "左右" came to function as a discourse marker expressing speakers' attitudes such as resignation, judgment, and permissiveness. Through a close analysis of selected examples from representative vernacular novels, this study offers a pragmatic categorization of its uses and identifies common syntactic patterns, particularly sentence-initial placement and collocations with elements like "是," "不," and "索性." Statistical data suggest that its usage was most frequent during the Ming period and declined somewhat in later works, while other near-synonymous modal expressions like "反正" and "横竖" appear to have gained prominence. This study contributes to a more nuanced understanding of modal adverbial expressions and discourse structuring in premodern Chinese narrative. | |||||||||
