| 内容記述 | The phenomenon of horizontal writing being adopted in China, where vertical writing had traditionally been practiced since ancient times, has attracted the interest of many Chinese researchers as an issue of writing history and publishing history. Recent years have seen a number of scholarly arguments rejecting conventional wisdom in favor of new theories regarding the question of what the first horizontally written Chinese book was. However, the nature of a string of Chinese characters written in a horizontal line, as well as the meaning that it holds for the book containing it, may vary depending on the case. An opinion that does not recognize this fact will inevitably fail as a valid refutation of existing theories. The employment of horizontal writing initially addressed the need to write Chinese and foreign words and phrases in parallel, and in modern times it was further promoted by the need to embed foreign language terms and mathematical formulas into Chinese texts. After reviewing the outline of relevant discussions to date, this study will consider the different types of Chinese characters written in a horizontal line and their respective early phases. | |||||
