| 内容記述 | Professor Louise Wilkinson (Lincoln University, UK) examines the historical significance of Eleanor de Montfort, wife of Simon de Montfort. Despite being the king's sister, Eleanor played a political role alongside the reformer barons following her husband's campaign for constitutional reform of the realm, using unpublished historical documents. Born circa 1216 as the youngest daughter of King John, Eleanor married William Marshall Junior, Earl of Pembroke, as part of a political effort to appease the anti-royal movement of the rebellious barons. However, after her husband died in 1231, she took a religious vow. However, she later formed a close connection with Simon de Montfort, the third son of a French nobleman who had come to England to claim the title of earl of Leicester. With the permission of her brother, King Henry III, she married him. Thereafter, she remained closely involved in her husband's political life. When the campaign for state reform was interrupted by his death in 1265, she rejected her brother king's proposal for relief, retiring to a convent in France, where her husband's relatives served as abbess. She lived out the rest of her life here. Wilkinson suggests that Eleanor's decision to dramatically shift from princess to a rebel stemmed from her realization that the reform movement was not just a fleeting conflict but a major project that would transform England's royal government. | |||||
