| 内容記述 | The works of Li Po: The Chinese Poet (1922) by Shigeyoshi Obata (小畑薰良) contains 124 poems and is the world's earliest complete English translation of Li Po's poetry. The book was reprinted 6 months after publication and remains influential today. The fact that Shigeyoshi Obata himself was influenced by American free verse in the early 20th century and translated Li Po's poems into English in free verse style is considered to be why the book remains influential today. Additionally, this thesis focuses on a detailed examination of the reason for Obata's own literacy in sinology. First, his father was a Japanese sinologist and guin (七弦琴) performer, so he grew up in a family environment full of sinology and inherited a good ability to understand Chinese poetry. Second, in compiling The works of Li Po, Shigeyoshi Obata collaborated with several Chinese students who, like him, had studied at Columbia University. One of them, Yulan Fung (1895‒1990), later became a prominent Chinese philosopher. Finally, a - crucial reference for Obata for his translation was Osaka Sinologist Gensui Kondou's 『李太白詩醇』, itself a reference to the Chinese 『唐宋詩醇』. This collection provided a well-regarded selection of poems that shaped Obata's translation. | |||||||||
