| 内容記述 | Since the late 15th century, during the Age of Exploration, European nations established large-scale sugarcane plantations in the Americas and the Caribbean islands. This development led to a significant increase in sugar production, and with advancements in distribution channels, sugar became one of the most important global trade commodities. In Japan, however, humid temperate climate made the country unsuitable for sugarcane cultivation, and the dissemination of advanced sugar refining techniques was delayed. Although records of sugar exist from the Nara period, large-scale sugar production within Japan began in the 17th century in the Okinawa and Amami Islands. Introduction of brown sugar refining techniques from China (Ming) to Okinawa region in the early 17th century marked the beginning of organized sugarcane cultivation and production. Under the dual governance of the Satsuma Domain (Han) and the Ryukyu Kingdom, the sugar manufactures leveraged its geographical advantage on East Asian maritime trade routes, coarse sugar became a main export product of the Ryukyu Kingdom. From 1693 to 1888, the Satsuma Domain implemented a series of policies to manage sugarcane cultivation and sugar production in Okinawa. This study examines the traditional sugar manufactures in the Okinawa Islands from the early modern period to the Meiji era. By analyzing historical records and local chronicles related to sugar production, this research investigates the historical development of the sugar manufactures, the production policies of the state and prefectural governments, and the relationship between technology and production. Furthermore, it identifies the distinctive features of Okinawa's sugar manufactures within the context of sugar production in East Asian islands regions. Additionally, using the natural conditions of present-day Ie Island as a case study, the study explores the natural factors influencing sugar production in Okinawa. | |||||
