| 内容記述 | This study examines the trends in northern Vietnam during the late l8th to early l9th centuries, a period marked by frequent shifts in the ruling powers from the Lê-Trịnh regime to the Tây Sơn dynasty and to the Nguyễn dynasty. It focuses on villages known as tao le (皂隷), which were partially/fully exempt from official obligations, including taxes and labor services, in exchange for managing and maintaining shrines registered for the state worship system. After seizing control of northern Vietnam, the Tây Sơn dynasty issued imperial edicts to the tao le villages, generally approving the tax exemptions granted during the Lê-Trịnh period. However, some villages' requests were not considered by the Tây Sơn court; this Prompted residents to appeal to officials through official documents, ultimately asserting their previous recognition under the Lê-Trịnh regime and their contribution to the state worship system. When the ruling power in northern Vietnam shifted from the Tây Sơn to the Nguyễn dynasty, some villages retained their tao le status, continuing the privileges established since the Lê-Trịnh period. Others, however, were not granted such status, leadmg some to submit official documents in an attempt to gain recognition. Thus, as northern Vietnam underwent frequent changes in the ruling powers during the late l8th to early 19th centuries, the villages competed for limited resources and actively sought to reduce their Public Obligations through strategic appeals and negotiations with the authorities. | |||||
