| 内容記述 | According to a commonly held view among Japanese researchers of Chinese history, the noun Zhongguo, literally signifying "the middle country", was established as a name denoting the country of China either after the Xinhai Revolution in the early twentieth century or after the Opium Wars in the mid-nineteenth century. However, an examination of various kinds of documents of the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries reveals that Zhongguo was in fact already in wide use as a country name during that period along with other names of the same kin such as Zhonghua (guo), signifying "the middle flowery country". This article will observe and analyze instances of country names for China that appear in pre-modern documents written by Westerners (such as general descriptions of China, books on world geography, religious publications, dictionaries and language textbooks) as well as in those written by the Chinese (such as accounts of world geography, foreign travel diaries and newspaper articles), and clarify how Zhongguo and other names for China were used in the Chinese language during the period preceding modern times. A later section will be devoted to a brief discussion of the history of Tyuugoku, the loaned form of Zhongguo in Japanese, in which it will be argued that it also began to be used much earlier than has been believed. | |||||
