| 内容記述 | In 2021, Zanzibari-born British novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah was awarded the Nobel Prize for 'for his uncompromising and compassionate presentation of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents'. Regardless of the Swedish Academy's intention, it served as a timely intervention because the British government had just ceased even to pretend to be a 'country of refuge', a nation whose heart is allegedly swayed by 'just compassion' for persecuted refugees. Read two decades after its first publication, Gurnah's By the Sea (2001) addresses Zanzibari refugees' diverse ways of being with creativity and thoughtfulness. Instead of recapitulating readymade narratives about refugees, this novel follows the spatio-temporal and spiritual journey of a middle-aged Zanzibari asylum seeker who had long 'preferred not to' speak à la Bartleby until he decided to narrate his own story like Shahrazad. Through this transformation, he not only becomes the author of his own life but also enters into a kind of contract with others, reinserting himself into the world -a network of beings- afresh. By so doing, Gurnah's novel at once exposes various forms of unhappiness and explores a form of (small) happiness in difficult times. | |||||
