| 内容記述 | Most Northern artists, except for Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who traveled to Italy during the early modern era, particularly in the 16th century, returned with copy drawings and other artworks depicting ancient ruins and Renaissance masterpieces in Italy. However, in Bruegel's case, the only surviving evidence of his Italian journey consists of landscape drawings, some of which were later used in prints published by Hieronymus Cock. This has led some scholars to speculate that Bruegel had an exclusive contract with Cock for this purpose. However, there is no evidence to support this claim. Nils Büttner argues that Bruegel focused solely on landscape drawings and sketches for commercial reasons, anticipating their market demand. Büttner attributes the growth of landscape in popularity to several factors: the development of geography and topography in Antwerp, which fostered a vast market for related paintings, prints, maps, and drawings; the growing humanist fascination with nature, which encouraged extensive discussions and awareness of the subject; and the emergence of a distinctive drawing style, characterized by dated and signed works, which enhanced the recognition of drawings as art. In this study, I reassess Bruegel's Italian journey by drawing on Büttner's detailed analysis of newly discovered evidence that clarifies his itinerary and travel dates. While Bruegel's sole focus on landscape drawings was obviously driven by their commercial value for prints, the rise in popularity of landscape imagery in the 16th century -- an era marked by frequent wars -- was also shaped by political concerns over land and territory. Before landscapes became purely aesthetic objects, they served as sites for strategic analysis and route planning. Bruegel's deliberate visit to the Strait of Messina in Italy may have been an attempt to observe the lingering impact of Europe's conflicts with the Ottoman Empire firsthand. By reassessing his Italian journey within its historical context and political intent, we obtain a deeper understanding of its significance. | |||||
