| 内容記述 | The First Gentleman of the Bedchamber held great responsibility as the de facto head of the king's private apartments. Specifically, he administered loyalty oaths from officials serving the king in his bedchamber, antechamber and chambers, and oversaw these officials. He also restricted access to the king's apartments. He presided over royal ceremonies including weddings and funerals, and managed the relevant expenses. The First Gentleman of Bedchamber was a powerful figure who wielded considerable authority within the court and an essential administrator who maintained the court's function. However, his great authority led to conflict. Particularly, many accounts of disputes over the right to hand over the king's wardrobe and responsibilities related to arranging mourning clothes and badges at mourning ceremonies have been recorded. When disputes arose, the First Gentleman of Bedchamber employed three resolution methods: discussion between the parties involved; consultation with court precedents and protocols experts well-versed; and arbitration by the king (or royal authority). This process indicates that the royal household allowed autonomous problem-solving. | |||||
