| 内容記述 | The present study was designed to explore undergraduate students' intentions regarding interpreting classes. According to the two surveys conducted with educators in charge of interpreting education at universities (Someya et al. 2005, and Takahashi et al. 2022) their top purpose of education was not to train would-be interpreters but rather to increase students' English proficiency. It is not certain whether the students themselves are aware of this prevailing teaching policy for interpreting classes. Therefore, in order to determine students' intentions, interviews were conducted with two groups of students majoring in English: students taking an interpreting class and students not taking one. The students were asked about the reasons behind their intention. It was revealed that students thought that interpreting classes were only intended to train would-be interpreters and unless they want to become an interpreter, the classes are not relevant to them. It is closely linked to their career plan. On the other hand, those who take an interpreting class wanted to improve their interpreting skills as they were not able to deliver good interpretations in their part-time workplaces as ad-hock interpreters. Consequently, interpreting educators are encouraged to stress their teaching policy to convey the desired message to prospective students. | |||||
