The emergency call (119) is a form of communication that requires speedy and accurate information sharing. The characteristics of this communication are that the dispatcher is in control, there is a sense of urgency, and callers are likely to be emotionally distraught and lack experience in emergency call procedures. Prior knowledge of the caller may be effective in achieving speedy and accurate emergency calls, but this hypothesis needs to be evaluated. This study examined the effects of prior knowledge of the emergency call procedure on speed and accuracy. Participants were classified into an experimental condition with knowledge of the procedure and a control condition. They watched a video in which a person was injured and then made a simulated emergency call. The active-duty dispatchers responded as experimental collaborators. The analysis showed that the experimental condition had shorter average talk times. On the contrary, there was no significant difference in the information transmission accuracy score between the conditions. The necessary information was transmitted in both conditions. Furthermore, in the analysis of speech behavior, the number of turn-taking, dispatcher's uttered characters and self-repetitions tended to be lower in the experimental group than in the control group. Our findings suggest that prior knowledge facilitates faster and more efficient emergency calls. Finally, the importance of prior knowledge was discussed. |
