| 内容記述 | Yingde, situated along the midstream of the Beijiang River in Guangdong Province, is renowned for its deity, Cao Zhu Niang Niang. Her real name remains unknown, and she is often referred to as Lady Yu. Official narratives portray her as the wife of a military leader who died resisting Huang Chao’s invasion, later sanctified as Yingde’s guardian deity through imperial decrees, recognizing her miraculous posthumous interventions after death. In contrast, folk narratives present her as a farmer’s daughter who experienced a miraculous event in childhood, engaged in righteous acts, and ultimately died defending her village. She was deified posthumously after aiding the emperor through supernatural means. This story illustrates a transformation from human to immortal to deity. In this paper, I explore the differing logic behind these two deification narratives within the local societal context. | |||||||||
