| 内容記述 | The sheng, a free-reed instrument integral to Chinese tradition, occupies a significant place in Chinese music history due to its unique timbre and intricate structure. The oldest known sheng artifacts, discovered in the Tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng and dating back approximately 2400 years, include variations with twelve, fourteen, and eighteen pipes, featuring bamboo reeds and painted gourd bodies. Over time, the sheng’s prevalence in both folk and court music increased, establishing its importance in ensembles and solo performances alike. In the 8th century, the sheng, known in Japan as the sho, was introduced to Japan by envoys and became a key instrument in Japanese gagaku. Artifacts from the Tang Dynasty, preserved in Japan’s Shōsō-in, highlight the deep and extensive cultural exchanges between China and Japan during this period. This study aims to delineate the development of the reedpipes in China and Japan, exploring its evolution and musical significance across different cultural contexts, thereby providing a foundation for further research on the instrument. | |||||
