| 内容記述 | This study examines the 1922 Revised Taiwan Education Ordinance, which aimed to establish educational equality during the Japanese Colonial Period in Taiwan. Despite its goals, segregation persisted, with Taiwanese students underrepresented in such prestigious schools, as Tainan First Girls’ High School. Entrance exams rooted in the Japanese curricula were a disadvantage to the Taiwanese students, which were intensified by the social and cultural discrimination. Notably, academic performance data refute the stereotypes of Taiwanese inferiority, showing that Tainan Second Girls’ High School, predominantly attended by Taiwanese students, outperformed its Japanese-majority counterpart in 1931. This highlights how school environments and perceived biases shaped enrollment patterns rather than academic skills. The study concludes that segregation in Taiwanese girls’ education resulted not only from systemic policies but also from broader social and cultural dynamics. It reveals the gap between proclaimed equality and actual discrimination, offering insights into the colonial education’s inequalities. | |||||||||
