| 内容記述 | In the past, Hawaii was often written in kanji as “布哇” in Japan. Its first character “布” was also used as an elliptical component of compounds such as “布国”, denoting the Kingdom of Hawaii, and “日布”, denoting Japan and Hawaii. These writing methods were widely used until 1946, when the Ministry of Education published “当用漢字表” (A Restrictive List of Kanji for General Use), in which it was stipulated that place names and personal names of foreign countries, excluding the Republic of China, should be written in kana. However, the basis for the kanji spelling “布哇” is obscure. Why was Hawaii spelled this way? In other words, how do the two characters in “布哇” correspond to the pronunciation of the place name? This essay attempts to clarify, through an analysis of information concerning Hawaiian, English, Chinese and Japanese, the process through which this mysterious kanji spelling was formed and spread to society. | |||||
