| 内容記述 | After the Gregorian Reformation at the end of the 11th century, the argument concerning the boundary between secular and ecclesiastical authorities arose in various parts of Western Europe. Additionally, the significance of the coronation ceremonies of emperors and kings with anointing oil by bishops was disputed. To elucidate the relationship between ecclesiastical authority and secular powers in the first half of the 13th century in England, we analyze the letters from Robert Grosseteste, Bishop of Lincoln (pontificate 1235-1253) to Henry III of Anjou (reigned 1216-1272), King of England, in which the bishop’s authority over the King’s governmental power was verbalized. The edited and published collection contains 132 letters, six of which are addressed to Henry III. To complement the issues addressed to Henry III in the letters, we also refer to the letters to Queen Eléanor and the king’s officials, William Raleigh, Hugh de Pattishall, Martin Belet, and Richard Lexington. Among the issues addressed, the following topics will be clarified in this paper: the legitimation of postmarriage babies, the question of the boundaries of ecclesiastical jurisdiction, the hierarchical relationship between the sacred and secular supremacy over the significance of anointing the king, taxation of the clergy, and the advowson dispute between the sacred and secular authorities over the right to present a clergy to parish churches. In letter 125 addressed to Henry, Grosseteste not only asked the King to comply with the Catholic theology but also offered to correct bishop’s own script. In addition, based on the exchange between Grosseteste and Henry at the Great Council of 1253, in which Henry asked Grosseteste to state his gravamina and promised to fulfill each item of it, this paper concludes that the bishop and the king were on friendly terms concerning the above mentioned dispute. Grosseteste, as a priest who transmitted God’s teachings to the secular congregations and pastored them, insisted that the secular authorities should recognize his role of maintaining and protecting the faith. In response, Henry III recognized that he was a Christian king and promised to observe the sacraments and perform rites for the veneration of saints as well as to accept the clergy’s claims and protect their social existence. He sought to govern the inhabitants within the limits of his secular jurisdiction and to protect the institutions of the church to preserve the Catholic faith according to common law. While playing different roles, the Holy See and the seculars sought to cooperate and fulfill their duty of maintaining the peace. The Catholic faith was effective as a common denominator among the laity performing secular peacekeeping functions in Western Europe during the pontificate of Pope Innocent III. The relationship between the pastoral care of Grosseteste and Henry III’s royal rule demonstrated this state of affairs. | |||||
