| 内容記述 | In this paper, we examine the Meiji-era conversation textbook Seii Zatsuwa (生意襍話) as a case study. We explore the possibility that the seemingly trivial choice of words in various commercial situations within the textbook was carefully made based on the speakers’ relationships, particularly in relation to achieving of the goal of success in commerce with Chinese individuals. We specifically focus on the vocabulary of second-person pronouns, highlighting the deliberate distinction between sellers and buyers. Additionally, we discuss the importance of not only using correct Mandarin and employing skillful but also employing skillful rhetoric based on a guidebook for Chinese merchants. | |||||
