内容記述 | Tsurezuregusa (Essays in Idleness) is a collection of essays written by Yoshida Kenko (ca. 1283-1352) during the late Kamakura period. During the revival of the classical literature of the early Edo period (1603-1868), Tsurezuregusa came to be studied and annotated by court nobles and other educated people participating in the cultural salons that were presided over by the Gomizunoo (1559-1680), a cloistered emperor. As publishing culture arose and grew, these annotations were taken as source material for several later-printed editions, which resulted in numerous books and annotations. During the Jokyo and Genroku periods (1684-1702) in particular, more than 13 editions of Tsurezuregusa, including illustrated editions, were published, and it acquired popularity among the townspeople, becoming a classic treatise known to all. Previous studies have noted instances wherein the illustrations for Nagusami-gusa (1652), a printed edition of Tsurezuregusa, became a source of illustrations for Nara-ehon; hence, it is extremely important to focus on the illustrations of printed editions of Tsurezuregusa. This paper analyzes the illustrated woodblock prints that were produced during the Genroku period (1688-1704) up to the first half of the 18 th century, examining the scenes that were illustrated, the source of the illustrations, and the kind of readers they had. The analysis of the text, annotations, style of illustrations, and painted scenes reveals that Tsurezuregusa changed from a scholarly or didactic book to an entertaining read over time. The various innovations in the illustrations suggest that the publishers aimed to attract new readers, such as women, children, and novice students who gathered at terakoya (temple schools). During the Genroku period, the literature, culture, and rituals fostered by the court nobles brought a cultural epoch to the samurai and merchant classes. In response to the needs of the times, new readers enjoyed the refined culture of the imperial court through the classical text Tsurezuregusa. | |||||
