In this study, I have examined the process of development, interruption, and reinstatement of the periodic market in Kubota Village. The Kubota periodic market was held in the urban district developing on both sides of the main street in southern Kubota Village. The people of Kubota Village set their market days to avoid them coinciding with the market days of other nearby towns, such as Konosu and Matsuyama. It was one of those periodic markets that formed the local market system in the late seventeenth century. In the eighteenth century, the Kubota periodic market was discontinued and turned into an annual fair held at the end of the year. In the early nineteenth century, the production of cotton textiles developed in the Yokomi County. The visiting traders from Kisai Town wanted these products and therefore started trading on the traditional market days of Kubota Village. Gradually, in 1822, Kubota Village became a periodic market for cotton textiles.
