The author reviewed old maps, records of past earthquakes and tsunamis, and the coastal topography of the Wakayama Plain, and examined when and under what kind of force the sandy ridges near the mouth of the present Kino-kawa River were cut off to form the present month. As a result, no record of tsunamis exceeding 3m and no tsunami deposits have been found in the Wakayama Plain, suggesting that tsunamis did not cut the sandy ridges III exceeding 10m. Therefore, we propose that the tsunami of the Meio Earthquake did not cut the sandy ridges III exceeding 10m. Therefore, we reject Yada’s theory that the sandy ridges was cut by the tsunami of the Meio Earthquake, and believe that Wadaura was severely damaged by the tsunami of the Meio Earthquake, which hit the present mouth of the Kino-kawa River before 1498. The cause may have been lateral erosion of the Kino-kawa River or artificial excavation of sandy ridges as well as the Kino-kawa River breaking through the sandy ridges I and II.
