The Sunnichi-Ko in early modern Nara worshipped Mount Mikagayama and Mount Kasuga as sacred places. They believed that the mountain was located in the eastern, that the rituals were held in January, and that the mountain’s lush spring scenery was proof of the presence of the gods and Buddha on the mountain. Through their rituals, they lived in a time and space unified by the culture of “life. On the other hand, the Fuji-ko in early modern Edo (Tokyo) worshipped Mt. Fuji was located in the south west part of the city, and the ritual of climbing the mountain was held in summer. The mountain was the paradise where Amida Buddha lived. Through their rituals, they lived in a time and space unified by the culture of ”death.
